Watching the tube
Every fall season to television networks try to grab our attention with some new batch of shows to entertain us. As quite the avid television watcher this is almost an interesting time of year to either miss shows that did not make it another season or pick up some new shows to watch. Oh, and I might add that I only have DTV (over the air) broadcasts, so my options are already severely limited.
Anyway, I believe the only channel to have a really well rounded and good new line-up of shows to be ABC. Sure, NBC and CBS have some good shows, but not really any new shows that you are hearing anything overwhelmingly good news about. Pretty much the only show on CBS worth watching by all is How I Met Your Mother. It is a well rounded comedy of the story told in reverse-ish of how the main character Ted, meets his wife. Who has yet to be even hinted at in the five season run thus far. And as everyone will tell you, it is reminiscent of the Friends show that ended a couple years back. I think though I prefer HIMYM over it though because its characters are closer in age to me and share about the same type of humor. Supposedly, the show Big Bang Theory is pretty good as well, but I have never watched it. But the geek in me tells me that it might be a good show to pickup, eventually.
As for NBC. I had the hopes of adding the new show Community to my list of shows to watch. However, I watched the pilot and was rather disappointed. It seemed that they took all the jokes and comedy of the show and revealed it all in the promos and ads for the show. So when it came to airtime, the viewer already knew pretty much the entire episode and it was just not that funny. Others might have thought so, but it just did not mesh together well as a comedy. But I was told that the rest of the shows so far have been much better, so we will see if I ever take the time to watch those too. Other NBC shows that I have liked are The Office and Chuck. The Office to me is a good show, but not a must see. I find it rather painful to watch Michael act so completely stupid and utter oblivious in general to his surroundings. But I guess other people find him funny for that reason. For me that shows only good moments happen between Dwight and Jim. If they could have their own show I think that would be awesome, but I have no idea how they could do that. As for Chuck, I love it for everything that it contains. Yes, the story is rather geeky and highly fictional, but the everyday guy becoming a spy thing is just entertaining. It is a good mash of spy drama, romantic interests, geek talk, and comedy all in one. So I look forward to the 3rd season of Chuck to come out in January, if not March.
So how about the network that has done it best so far in my opinion. ABC seems to know what they are doing as of late. A lot of the new shows on the network have been picked up for full seasons, which an extremely good vote of confidence in the shows they have chosen. Three of ABC’s shows have intrigued me and keep me watching so far. The first is the comedy Modern Family, which has made me laugh throughout each episode so far in its 7 show run so far. I find the interaction of the characters and the diversity of the 3 different families to be an extremely laughable and entertaining that they are also all related like a typical modern family would look like in today’s world. FlashForward is the next new show I like. I think its mainly because it is very similar to the feeling of Lost, which I also am awaiting a new (final) season. I feel though that it might be going to slow and the title of the show only allows it to go so far. But it is a mystery type show, which is very interesting because you want to keep watching to see why everyone blacked-out for 2 minutes 17 seconds. And thats why I will keep watching. Finally, V seems to be rather intriguing show as well, even though it literally just started. The first show moved real quickly, but revealed quite a lot about how the rest of the show will go. Will it hurt the show that it is moving too fast? Well we will see, it is on for the month of November and then it comes back in March.
I feel like I have failed to mention anything on FOX, but this is due to my lack of hardly watching the channel. Growing up with analog tv only was and ok thing, but we never received the channel well back then, so watching now in digital seems hard to do. Of course, it is especially difficult when any of the channels have conflicting schedules of shows you want to watch. If I had to watch anything of FOX it would probably be House.
Anyway thats enough rambling about the shows I like. Wow! this post is the longest yet. Hopefully, I can tone that down that a bit in the future, but I will mostly likely revisit this topic again in the future. Thanks for reading!
